If the Taipei Doctors Union could change something about the whole doctors’ labor standards today, we would do collective bargaining with many employers of the hospital. Unfortunately, we don’t have enough doctors to become our member.
According to Collective Agreements Act, an occupational union cannot bargain with employers until more than half of the doctors working in the hospital join the union.
We wish there were more compulsory course about labor standards in the colleges of medicine, so that there could be more medical students and young doctors realizing the function of unions.
If we had enough funding to recruit more staff, we would hold a speaking tour about labor education around the 11 colleges of medicine in Taiwan. I wish the Ministry of Labor or the Ministry of Health and Welfare could have provided some subsidy to us.
Furthermore, I hope more doctors will understand that if they want to work in a better workplace and to promote the qualities of life, they have to join Taipei Doctors Union and do collective bargain with the employers.
